Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese Manuel Lobo, the city changed hands several times between Portuguese and Spanish rule until Uruguay’s Declaration of Independence in 1825. These historical events shaped the capital of the Colonia department into a melting pot of architectural styles, where typical Portuguese colonial buildings blend with Spanish-inspired homes. Walking along its cobbled and irregular streets allows you to step back in time and enjoy a unique landscape with privileged views of the Río de la Plata.
