Colonia de Sacramento
Colonia de Sacramento is Uruguay's first UNESCO World Heritage site, declared in 1995. Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese Manuel Lobo, the city changed hands between the Portuguese and Spanish several times before Uruguay's Declaration of Independence in 1825. This history has left the city with a unique blend of architectural styles, where typical Portuguese colonial buildings coexist with Spanish-style homes. Walking along its cobblestone streets and admiring its scenic views of the Río de la Plata transports visitors back in time. Key attractions include the Portón de Campo, Calle de los Suspiros, the Lighthouse, Art Galleries, and Museums.
